Nesseby municipality has ca. 850 inhabitants, but covers a large area of ground so that each inhabitant has 1.5 square kilometres of land to him or herself! Varangerbotn is the main administrative centre of the area.

Nesseby´s existence has always been dependent on the stocks of fish in the Varanger fjord and the game on the plateaus. Fishing and reindeer farming have been the staple economies the past 500 years. Both the king crab and several different types of fish are abundant, and the area has good grazing pastures for reindeer.
